Reconstructing the mail platforms for Amtrak Regional trains is a great first step. It will not be enough for future high-speed trains. Additionally, the clearances may not be sufficient for the overhead electric wires needed for high-speed trains.

Therefore, the City is exploring the possibility of new tunnels under Canal Street and/or Clinton Street to provide the needed capacity.

Similar tunnels have been dug under many stations around the world, including Grand Central Station in New York as illustrated below.
