Bypassing Freight Congestion

In addition to expanding Union Station itself, dedicated tracks are needed to speed passenger trains around freight congestion in the last fifty miles into the city. Two core projects are located on Union Station property.

St. Charles Airline

A direct connection to the St. Charles Airline, a connecting railroad parallel to 16th Street, will improve flexibility in station use and routes out of town while facilitating direct O’Hare–McCormick Place trains.

21st Street Bridge

The Chicago Union Station Company owns the double-track bridge over the Chicago River near Chinatown. It will need to be replaced with a triple-track bridge with greater river clearance.
